AppZapper is one of the first Mac apps I bought when I switched from PC to Mac in 2009. Coming from Windows, OS X lacked an obvious solution for thoroughly uninstalling software.
The answer, of course, is dragging an app from the Applications folder to the Trash. But what about all the extra cruft that apps leave behind? AppZapper handled it.
This week, the app returned from a long hiatus to introduce a brand-new version of “the uninstaller Apple forgot” with AppZapper 3000.
But Launchpad went away with macOS 26 Tahoe, and it’s not one of the decisions that Apple revisited with macOS 27 Golden Gate. Anyway, AppZapper 3000 replaces a very legacy version of the app (that still worked!) while adding some really fun and interactive features. The timing is pretty good. Remember Launchpad? It featured the most user-friendly method for uninstalling software, at least for installations from the Mac App Store. You could hold the Option key to reveal an X icon that uninstalled the app from your Mac. Part of the AppZapper appeal has always been the signature sound effect that accompanies each zap. Now zapping isn’t just a sonic experience. Your cursor literally turns into a blaster, allowing you to aim and eliminate each bit of app cruft, like a video game.
Launchpad was only ever able to “uninstall” software from the App Store though, and that was never as thorough as AppZapper. Check it out: AppZapper 3000 includes three “zaps” before requiring a license, and it’s just as satisfying as ever to use.
