A Brazilian court has ordered Apple to tighten age controls around a casino-style app on the App Store, including requiring age verification before making in-app purchases. Here are the details.
The decision came after four child and adolescent rights groups filed a civil lawsuit in July, alleging that minors were able to download casino-style games from the App Store and purchase virtual chips with real money, despite Casino Roulette: Roulettist carrying an 18+ age rating.
As reported by Tilt , São Paulo’s Court of Justice has granted an emergency injunction requiring Apple to restrict minors’ access to the “Casino Roulette: Roulettist” app.
The court also established a daily fine of R$100,000 (roughly $19,500) for noncompliance. Beyond the specific app, the decision also bars Apple from allowing new apps with equivalent casino-style mechanics onto the App Store without effective age controls. Tilt reached out to Apple for comment, but the company had not responded at the time of publication.
In the decision, the court gave Apple five days to block new downloads of Casino Roulette: Roulettist by users registered as minors, and require “age verification for purchases of virtual chips with real money to continue playing or expand the in-app experience,” says Tilt . Tilt says the court also told Apple to preserve all records related to the app and present a technical report detailing the measures it has taken.
