The handwashing timer feature is currently absent from the new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 hardware. Well, this is odd.
Handwashing detection is still a feature in watchOS 27. It also remains a category in Apple Health, including the iOS 27.2 version. Handwashing detection works on Apple Watch Series 11 and Ultra 3, and it’s still included in the watchOS 27 guide. Handwashing detection arrived in 2020 as part of watchOS 7 . It’s likely this pandemic-era feature is just no longer supported by Apple’s 2026 hardware. Series 12 and Ultra 4 include the first overhauled processor for the first time in a few years. Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are both available now.
However, Apple’s newest watches aren’t included in the supported hardware list . It’s unclear if that’s an omission or a hardware difference. In theory, there’s no reason to even mention supported hardware if Apple planned to continue supporting the feature on its newest watches.
